Brian recently did an hour long podcast on Fine Woodworking’s Shop Talk Live. It’s a far ranging discussion from his early days as a chairmaker all the way through to his present endeavors. Click here to go directly to the podcast on your web browser. Or go to the Shop Talk Live page on Fine Woodworking’s web site then click on the Listen Now button. You can also find the podcast on iTunes.
During the podcast Brian talked about one of his first experiences making a chair that was inspired by reading the book Make a Chair from a Tree by Jennie (John) Alexander. The book is out of print but a DVD version of it is available. It is an excellent introduction to green wood chairmaking using hand tools. You can read about and purchase the DVD here as well as find additional green woodworking resources.
Brian also talked about using hickory bark as a seating material and described the amazing machine he designed and built to prepare the bark. Here’s a short video that shows the machine in action.
